#1 Happy Young Couple Decides To Try For A Family
Clare (26) and Dane (27) Rowe were a happy young couple. With their marriage well on its way, the Newcastle duo decided to try for a baby. After a year of trying, they were finally successful. But during a routine doctor’s visit, the soon-to-be parents received harrowing news.
#2 Doctor Delivers Shocking News
During a routine ultrasound exam at her 12-week appointment, Clare’s doctor discovered a complication which nobody could have predicted. Clare’s baby was developing with severe birth defects.
The Rowe’s hope for a happy, healthy family was shattered. Doctors were unsure if the child would even survive birth.
#3 Mother Has To Make Tough Decision
Devastated, Clare and Dane were facing an impossible choice. Being told that their child was “incompatible for life,” they had to make a decision no parent should ever have to make: to terminate the pregnancy or continue and hope for the best?
Clare knew what she wanted to do immediately
#4 Not One To Play God
Overcoming the heartbreak she felt when doctors declared her baby “incompatible for life,” Clare Rowe made her choice.
“I’m not one to play God but knowing she would have birth defects didn’t make me love her any less,” Clare told Austrailia’s Daily Mail. “I knew I wanted to fight for her.”
#5 Baby Azalea Defies Odds
Clare made the right decision.
On July 28th, 2016, Baby Azalea Valerie Rowe was born. Surviving the pregnancy was only the first challenge little Azalea had to face, however. Clare and Dane’s beloved miracle was born with a condition called Omphalocele, a disorder so rare that the new parents had trouble locating information.
#6 The Long Road Ahead
Baby Azalea was born with a section of her stomach, bowel, gall bladder, and liver on the outside of her body. Her abdominal muscles had not fully developed during the pregnancy, causing her organs to grow into her umbilical cord instead.
Little Azalea had a long road and many surgeries ahead of her.
#7 Her Organs Won’t Hold Her Back
Despite her rocky beginnings, Baby Azalea has managed to defy the odds and is now thriving. Her parents have learned to care for Azalea at home, however, they still receive regular visits from at-home nurses to help with Azalea’s condition. Over time, and through many surgeries, Azalea’s organs will be encased in her body.
